SpeedTrap Redesign
Endeavor Robotics: SpeedTrap
Fall 2018
Problem

SpeedTrap was a test rig that calculated average velocity by using a pair of laser tripwires. These tripwires often unaligned, forcing the team to halt tests to reset SpeedTrap.

Approach

Examined the laser drift, determined the cause was the linear aiming mechanism
Designed a rotational aiming system using in-house hardware
Designed new housing to prevent the laser from sliding during use
Modified the original CAD files in Creo to include my design
Operated the inhouse 3D printer and cleaned the final prints

Results

With the new design, the laser no longer drifted from the tripwire sensor. As well as removing the false triggers, the modified version cut the setup time in half.

Skills Demonstrated

Hardware troubleshooting
CAD modeling with Creo
Design for optimized 3D printing
Rapid prototyping and operating a 3D printer
